It still looks adorable when I trimmed them. I have actually made 6 and all the same issue. I have double checked all the measurements. 1/4 inch and the 8 1/2 by an entire inch. I have made it and for some reason the 3 inch and 8 1/2 inch strips need to be trimmed The 3 inch by about. I made 6 blocks with border for a table runner.

This pumpkin block will now be an 8½” square. Press the seams toward the background strips. Sew the 1½” x 8½” background strips to the top and bottom of the pumpkin block. Press the seams toward the border strips. Sew the 1½” x 6½” background strips on either side of the pumpkin block. Sew the stem and leaf row to the top of the orange strips. Sew the pieces together, then press both seams open toward the brown square. Just like you did with the other squares, trim away the corners ¼” from the sewn lines. Mark these from corner to corner as well, then sew on the lines.
